A prescription drug sold at Walmart and other chains is on its way to the U. S. market after U. Customs and Border Protection officials intercepted a package containing a capsule containing a prescription for Nexium 40 mg. The pills contained "an amount of Esomeprazole magnesium, a medicine used to treat reflux or acid-related stomach ulcers that is not available over-the-counter," the package said.
The package, which is marked "Nexium 40 mg," comes from the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates prescription drugs.
Walgreens, for example, sells a "Nexium 40 mg" prescription for $6.50 a bottle, while Walmart is on the market for $1.75 a bottle.
The two-pack includes 40 capsules, which can be taken in the morning and the following day and lasts up to two hours, according to the FDA.
The FDA said it is evaluating whether the capsule could cause an allergic reaction. A previous study found that consumers taking the capsule at least twice a day were more likely to experience an allergic reaction if they took the capsule at least twice a day.
The capsule is intended for use in children, not adults, and is not FDA approved for the treatment of reflux or acid reflux. It is also not approved for use in adults.
Walgreens also sells a similar prescription for Nexium 40 mg for $6.50 a bottle. However, the FDA has not approved the prescription for the medication for children ages 6 and older, and has not approved the capsule for adults.
Walmart sells a 40 mg prescription for $5.75 a bottle for a 14-day supply.
"Walmart is a leader in prescription medicine," said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb. "This is an important step in identifying a potential source of drug diversion and potentially minimizing the risk of serious health complications."
